Meals on Wheels

The Artesia "Meals-on-Wheels" organization, a nonprofit corporation, was organized in April of 1970 with the first meals delivered on April 19th to seven clients. The program was designed to provide nourishment that met the dietary needs of homebound seniors and other citizens in the area who otherwise might go hungry. Then, as today, many participants are people who do not require hospitalization while recovering from illness or surgery. Some need assistance because of ongoing health problems and simply need a helping hand in order to maintain their independence. Today, this volunteer service has grown in number of clients and volunteer workers.

Meals are prepared at Artesia General Hospital's dietary kitchen with emphasis on proper nutrition. Restricted diets can be accommodated to provide a delicious meal for those whose diets require adherence to special dietary needs such as diabetes, low sodium diets, allergy problems, soft foods, etc. The cost of the meal is minimal.

"Meals-on-Wheels" is a non-profit organization who's ability to serve its clients comes from the many volunteers who give willingly of their time. They are the vital link in our services and add an immeasurable human value to the program. We believe that those we serve should be treated with dignity and respect and our volunteers are the living examples of that belief.
